There are many factors that lead to dry, weakened skin on the hands, UV exposure, weather and repeated hand washing to name a few. As we age, our collagen and elastin production slows down and photo damage from UV exposure breaks down the protective barrier of our skin. This leads to creped, fragile skin that breaks and bruises easily.
Maintaining hydration is key. Using a moisturizer with a broad spectrum sunscreen is the best way to protect the hands. The most challenging part comes with hand washing throughout the day. Hot water, soaps and hand sanitizers all play a role in drying the skin. The key to healthy hands is the reapplication of a hydrating SPF hand lotion. Keeping it on your desk, by the sink, in your purse or anywhere close by will help you remember to reapply. Don’t forget to exfoliate!
Next time you’re visiting ASerenity, ask your therapist for a hand treatment. A professional enzyme mask or peel can help retexturize and rehydrate the skin, leaving it smooth and moisturized.
